Meditations
on Angkor
Way back in 2000 we had a magical few days visiting the incredible temples of Angkor in Cambodia. They are superb buildings in their own right but the atmosphere is much enhanced by the fact that they have only relatively recently and partially emerged from the tropical jungle having been lost for centuries. It is hard to decide whether the huge trees are destroying the buildings or holding the blocks together. After quite a long gestation, I finally put together a set of pieces inspired by this fabulous place for a solo exhibition in the
Fountain Gallery in 2007. As you can see, the pieces attempt to convey the rich colours of ancient stone and foliage in tropical light. They are also heavily influenced by the devotional statuary that adorns all these temples. |
