For most of my life I have been a maths teacher who embroidered in her spare time. But in 1990 my husband’s job took us to live in Singapore where I was able to take a break from teaching and turn to studying the culture and textiles of South East Asia, giving some lectures myself on Ikat dyeing and beaded clothing.
When I returned to England I studied for City & Guilds in embroidery and design at Richmond (1994–1998). I enjoyed discovering new techniques and working on my own designs. My then teenage daughter occasionally examined a piece and pronounced it ‘cool’. The ultimate compliment! I love patterns, both man made and natural and enjoy translating them into stitch.

Since October 2000 I have begun my second career as a textile artist, exhibiting both in solo and group shows and with ‘Kaleidoscope’ a mixed media group. My work is influenced by a love of travelling but is very varied and last year (2005) was mostly taken up with embroidering my daughter’s wedding dress!
At present I am chairman of the artists association that runs the Fountain Gallery in East Molesey and have had several exhibitions there and at other venues including:
